Discernment Counseling

IN-PERSON & ONLINE IN MONTCLAIR, NJ

When you’re unsure, discernment offers direction.

Not every couple comes in on the same page. One might want to rebuild, while the other isn’t sure they can. Discernment counseling is designed for that in-between space.

When people are unsure whether to stay or go, they often say things like:

“I’m scared of losing them, but also scared nothing will change.”

“I want to make this work, but I’m not sure they do.”

“A part of me wants to hold on, and another part’s already checked out.”

“Everyone wants me to decide, but I’m not ready yet.”

“I still love them, but I don’t know if it’s enough anymore.”

“What if I make a decision I can’t undo?”

What we’ll work on

Discernment Counseling can help

  • Clarify whether to work on repair or move toward separation.

  • Understand how you got to this point in your relationship.

  • Share and hear perspectives without defensiveness.

  • Choose next steps with more confidence and honesty.

  • Begin to separate fear and guilt from what’s truly right for each of you.

How It Works

Short-Term, Clarity-Focused

Discernment counseling usually takes 1–5 sessions, offering space to pause and get clear on what’s happening before deciding what’s next.

Choosing a Direction

By the end, you’ll have a clearer sense of whether to work on repair, separate, or take a pause with more understanding.

Individual & Shared Time

Each session includes time together and separately to talk openly, reflect, and understand what change would require.
