Questions about what it’s like to work together?

Here are some of the most common questions I get about therapy.

If you don’t see your question answered below,

contact me.

  • This is a question I get a lot, and it’s a fair one.

I choose not to work directly with insurance companies so I can protect the quality, privacy, and flexibility of our work together.

Insurance often limits how often we can meet, how long we can work together, and how progress is measured. In some cases, companies can deny or even take back payment after sessions.

Another important piece: many larger, insurance-based group practices are structured in a way that requires therapists to see a high volume of clients each day. That pace can be exhausting for therapists, and it can affect the depth and presence clients receive.

By staying out of network, I’m able to keep my caseload intentionally smaller. That means more energy, focus, and care for each person I work with. It also gives us more freedom in how often we meet, what we focus on, and how deeply we go.

This model also allows me to offer some sliding-scale spots, continue investing in advanced training, and sustain my work long-term in a way that benefits both of us.

    Using Out-of-Network Benefits

If you have out-of-network benefits, your insurance may reimburse you for part of your sessions. I can provide a monthly superbill (a detailed receipt) for you to submit.

You may want to ask your insurance company:

    • Do I have out-of-network benefits for behavioral health or outpatient therapy?

    • Is prior authorization required?

    • What percentage or amount is reimbursed per session?

    • Do I have a deductible? How much has been met, and when does it reset?

If you have questions about fees, sliding scale options, or reimbursement, reach out. We can talk it over and see what makes sense for you.

    • Individual sessions: $175/60 min.

    • Couples: $200/ 60 min.

    • I also offer sliding scale spots to make therapy more accessible. Please reach out if this may be helpful for you.

  • You can schedule a free 15-minute consultation call or book a session directly through my online portal, whichever feels easier.

  • I offer sessions on weekdays, weekday evenings, and Saturdays. Therapy is available both online and in-person at my Montclair office.

You can check the client portal for available days and times. Feel free to contact me at 973.283.5986 or here if you do not see openings, as I may have flexibility.

  • I ask for 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule. This helps keep the schedule open for others who may need a spot.

If a session is canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice, the full fee applies. If we can find another time within the same week, I’m glad to waive the fee.

  • That’s more common than people think. Sometimes it’s about fit, and other times it’s about timing, where you are in your readiness to feel open.

My approach is active and collaborative; we’ll check in about what feels helpful and what doesn’t.

  • This is a common question. To protect confidentiality and maintain a balanced alliance, I don’t see someone as both their individual therapist and their couples therapist. These are different kinds of relationships, and combining them can create a conflict of interest.

If individual therapy would be helpful alongside couples work, I can provide referrals to trusted therapists for that support.

  • The name What We Hold was inspired by Maira Kalman’s book Women Holding Things.
